How about that younger generation? The one’s which each new generation of parents roll their eyes at. In the 50’s it was because of Elvis, in the 60’s and 70’s because of the counterculture movement. In the 80’s it was spiked hair, punk rock and grungy slackers. Finally is Generation Y or millennials as they’re sometimes called. The ones who came of age around the year 2000, raised on cell-phones, internet access and hundreds of TV channels, often mischaracterized as rude, prone to drugs, alcohol and obesity.
But just for a change, here’s some good news about America’s younger generation, they pray more. About 41 percent of adults aged 18 to 29 prayed on a daily basis in the 80’s. It dropped to 40 percent in the 90’s and is currently up to 45 percent. Older Americans still pray more often, but the reality is that in decades past, when today’s older Americans were younger, they prayed less than today’s young people. Another big improvement over previous generations, today’s youth are less supportive of abortion. Between the ages of 18 to 29 only 24 percent believe abortion should be legal under all circumstances. That’s down 4 percent since 2000 and 12 percent since 1990. And it’s now 23 percent of young adults who want abortion to be illegal under all conditions. That doesn’t sound like much but in a statistical sense it’s the largest group of any, even topping Americans over 65 years of age who come in at only 21 percent. Beyond merely responding to polls, the younger generation is actually doing something about their beliefs. Population Research Institute tells us that participants in Washington’s yearly march for life are getting younger each year, despite Planned Parenthood’s assertion that our youth are mostly pro-choice. Do a Google search for “Thine Eyes” or just go to www.thineeyes.org and see for yourself. There’s a front page video to watch but be prepared to lose the old stereotype of crotchety, angry old men and women railing on about taking away women’s rights. It’s all about the up and coming generation standing tall and speaking loud for the rights of unborn children. What’s most noticeable is their passion, these kids really care about saving the children. Might this be the generation that finally undoes Roe V Wade? Many people think Roe V Wade can be challenged right now and if the younger generation gets more conservative with age, as each generation does, then even more of their age group will become pro-life in years to come. If it’s challengeable now, then a more conservative up and coming generation can make it beatable in years to come, and they already have the desire. When it’s all said and done, some of us from the older generation might need to prepare for being humbled as we’re forced to watch a more responsible younger generation clean up the mess we created. |
